The TP-Link Archer C64 AC1200 Dual-Band Gigabit WiFi Router targets the complaint you hear in almost every flat — full bars in the room with the router, and a dead zone two rooms away. Four fixed high-performance antennas and Beamforming are the answer: Beamforming steers the signal toward the devices that are connected instead of wasting it on empty space.

It runs both bands. 2.4 GHz reaches up to 300 Mbps and travels further through brick and concrete; 5 GHz reaches up to 867 Mbps and is the band for online classes, streaming and gaming, where a dropped frame is what you actually notice. Putting the right device on the right band is usually a bigger upgrade than raw speed.

Wired connections run through 1× Gigabit WAN and 4× Gigabit LAN ports, so a faster internet package is not throttled at the router. And when phones, laptops, a TV and a couple of cameras are all online, MU-MIMO lets this Archer C64 Router talk to several of them simultaneously rather than one at a time.

Security on this TP-Link AC1200 Router is WPA3, the current Wi-Fi encryption standard, with stronger password protection and better defence against brute-force attempts. There are separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz guest networks for visitors, parental controls with URL filtering and time limits, and Access Point mode if you already have a router and just need more coverage. TP-Link Archer C64 sets up from the Tether app or the web interface in a few minutes, and its 120 × 120 × 27.9 mm body takes up very little shelf space.

Important Usage Instructions

• Use a CAT5e or CAT6 cable on the gigabit ports so the link is not capped at 100 Mbps.
• Place the router in an open, central spot rather than inside a cabinet or behind a TV.
• Keep the antennas upright and away from metal shelves, mirrors and the microwave.
• Assign streaming and gaming devices to 5 GHz and distant devices to 2.4 GHz.
• Change the default Wi-Fi password after setup, keep WPA3 on, and give visitors the guest network.
